Jim Butterworth via Facebook: From Ralph Jackson.

Jim Butterworth (1931-2025) sailed with Harrison’s from 1953-1965, sadly died this morning. He sailed with Harrison’s as a junior engineer after serving his apprenticeship ashore, becoming chief engineer before leaving Harrison’s then working many years for Shell UK.

I have an uncle (Jim Butterworth was a great friend of his and mentor to my him during his own career with Shell) who lives a couple of miles from Jim & Elspeth Brierley, outside Ruthin, the usual comment “I wonder if they knew each other?” Turns out that they did, paid off the “old” Wayfarer together when Jim Brierley was 3rd Mate and Jim Butterworth 5th Engineer. They travelled from London to Chester by train, Jim Butterworth’s parents then gave Jim a lift home, The Golden Lion, Llanfilhangel, Ruthin. They had not seen each other since but both has clear memories of the trip on the Wayfarer and their journey home. Sadly Jim Brierley passed in 2023 so did not get to see each other. I met Jim Butterworth at Jim Brierley’s

funeral, a very quiet great guy)

All very sad - does anyone remember Jim Butterworth?
